Throughout life, every person faces challenges, obstacles and difficulties that they must overcome. The ability to bounce back through adversity is called resilience. Resilience involves working through challenges in a proactive way which helps build confidence and mastery in overcoming difficulties. Being able to do so supports personal growth, good mental health, and contributes to positive feelings of self-worth and self-esteem, this toolkit offers suggestions and strategies to help foster resilience.
QuickStart Nova Scotia Helping Parents Get a Head Start
Quickstart nova scotia is a parent-mediated coaching program designed to empower caregivers of toddlers with a suspected, provisional, or confirmed diagnosis of autism to teach and support their child’s development. The interdisciplinary team of behaviour analysts, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and parent coaches will share the program’s use of the early start denver model intervention to provide a naturalist teaching framework that is flexible, accessible, collaborative, and supportive for the family.

Healthy Relationships, Sexuality & Autism - Sexuality Education Resources for Caregivers Project
This project aims to develop accessible, comprehensive sexuality education resources that support the needs of caregivers of autistic people, autistic individuals, and other stakeholders. We hope that these resources will build their capacity to provide comprehensive sexuality education information to the autistic person(s) in their lives.
Perspectives on Complex Behaviours: Understanding and Supporting Children with Self-Injurious Behaviour
Complex behaviours, including severe Self-Injurious Behaviours (SIB), in children with developmental disabilities can be challenging to manage and support. Medical professionals typically do not have much experience with severe SIB, and families can struggle to find adequate resources and specialists to help. In this series of interviews, we explore the perspectives of a parent, a pediatrician, and a behaviour analyst who are all connected to the Self-Injurious Clinic at BC Women and Children’s Hospital and the Family Support Institute of BC in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Indigenous Individuals who are part of the intellectual disability community described their challenges and joys during a project created by AIDE Canada and partners Surrey Place, from 2021 to 2022. The year-long project, which was structured around the first nations holistic lifelong learning model, began with a series of community gatherings hosted by an Indigenous Elder. Forty community members attended the gatherings. The resources below were built to amplify and respond to community voices.

Picky Eaters Webinar
This workshop will begin by discussing some of the common myths around mealtimes for children with ASD, as well as explore different types of eating behaviours. We will then “dig in” and describe a model for why picky eating develops, which includes physiology, motor skills, and/or learned behaviours. To conclude, the workshop speakers will share and discuss some general strategies for caregivers and parents to take home and apply.
