Meaningful Employment: Starting Your Career
We will address common workplace challenges such as social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and communication differences while highlighting the unique strengths autistic people bring to the workplace, including attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and innovative thinking.
The webinar will emphasize the importance of self-advocacy, understanding and communicating your needs, and requesting necessary accommodations. Additionally, we will explore how to identify personal interests, strengths, and skills to find fulfilling roles, the significance of setting realistic career goals, and the importance of exploring various career paths and industries.
Julia Kate Mitchell is an Autistic self-advocate and serves as the Education and Employment Specialist at the Pacific Autism Family Network. Her advocacy includes speaking engagements for AIDE Canada and social media activism via her Instagram account @juliakatemitchell.
Kayla Tellier has been a member of Voices of Autism since 2018, infusing positivity into every interaction. Beyond VOA, Kayla is deeply engaged in the community, contributing to Canucks Autism Network's training and events teams, serving as a Peer Facilitator, One-on-One support worker, and collaborating on autism-related research.
Bailey DeBruin-Stam is the Manager of Employment Initiatives at PAFN, dedicated to helping individuals achieve their career aspirations. She collaborates closely with employers to foster inclusive workplaces. Outside of work, Bailey, a proud toddler mom, enjoys reading and running.
SF Walker, Manager of Voices of Autism leads a diverse team of advisors across British Columbia, collaborating to drive positive change. As the Interprovincial Consultant for AIDE Canada, SF values the unique perspectives of her autistic peers and enjoys working collaboratively. Outside of work, SF finds joy in music, cooking, and documentaries.
Accessing autism resources can be a challenge, but it's easier when you have partners and allies by your side. Connect with other parents, caregivers, and professionals in the autism community to share information, advice, and support. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive world for individuals with autism and their families.
