Sensory Processing in Autism: The Neuroscience & Practical Strategies for Home

This workshop will provide information about our current scientific understanding of the brain and the issues that can contribute to sensory processing differences. After explaining the science, participants will learn a variety of evidence-based strategies for families to try at home to help improve sensory reactions and empower autistic individuals to manage their sensory experiences.

SPEAKERS:

Moira Peña

Moira Peña, BScOT, MOT Reg. (Ont.) is an occupational therapist working at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto who has dedicated her career to supporting children and youth who experience sensory processing challenges. She is an Expert Hub Team member of the ECHO Ontario Autism Program. She is also a Lecturer in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto.

Fakhri Shafai

Fakhri Shafai, PhD, MEd, studies sensory issues, anxiety, and emotion processing differences in ASD. She first worked as a behavioural intervention specialist, educational aide, and science teacher before earning her Master's degree in Education. Dr. Shafai then went on to earn a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia and had additional training as a postdoctoral fellow at Western University in the Brain and Mind Institute. She has worked closely with numerous Autism organizations and has provided educational presentations and webinars to groups throughout Canada. Dr. Shafai recently became the Research and Evaluation Project Coordinator for AIDE Canada. In this new role, she collaborates with researchers and stakeholders across Canada to translate research and promote evidence-based practices for self-advocates and their families.
